Positive Growth in Online Shopping in 2009

There are technology advancements in every field. The convenience and flexibility for people is increasing because of these technology advancements. Now customer can shop any where from his home with out visiting any physical stores, because of technology. Day by day the popularity of online shopping is increasing. People are giving more preference to shop online.

According to comScore, $29.1 billion amount of money was spent on online shopping from November to December in 2009. It was increased by 4 percent from the same period in the last year. Online holiday shopping season showed a positive growth in the 2009. There is 20 percent of total sales on jewelry and watches, and 15 percent of total sales on consumer electronics, 8 percent on event tickets, 7 percent on computer hardware, 6 percent on books and magazines.

There is an expectation that it will be increased in the next coming year. Online retailer promotions and guaranteed shopping, return policies and many advantages are enhancing the online shopping.

Gloves or Mittens Sales in US: 2007 to 2009

A glove is a garment used to cover hand. For each finger gloves have separate opening or coverings for each finger and for the thumb. Fingerless gloves have an opening, but no covering sheath for each finger. Gauntlets are fingerless gloves with one large opening instead of individual openings for each finger. Entire hand is covered by Mittens but these don’t have separate finger openings or sheaths. Though mittens and gloves are made with same material, but mittens are warmer than gloves because fingers can maintain their warmth better when they are together.

Gloves are the part of dress accessories. $6 is the average unit sale price. Knit gloves are better than leather and fabric glove styles. Shiny and space dyed yarns and other novelty yarns are popular knit gloves.

A niche fashion item is short leather driving and riding gloves. 35 percent of the sales done by age group 35 to 54 of customers. 44 percent of the sales of gloves were for the gifts for others. Sales of gloves in 2007 were 383.4 million dollars and in 2008 were 462.7 million dollars and 448 million dollars in 2009.

Diamond Imports Decline in US

U.S. polished diamond imports at the time of April 2009 declined 47 percent to $794.2 million. Polished diamond exports descended to 46 percent to $589.8 million. Final polished imports, the magnitude to which imports topped exports, for the U.S. during April reduced to 52 percent to $204.4 million.

Rough imports dropped 64 percent to $20.6 million, and rough exports were reduced 40 percent to $12 million. Final rough imports dropped 76 percent to $8.6 million. The U.S. net diamond inventory, calculating total imports less than total exports, dropped 54 percent to $213 million in April.

The numbers also revealed identical declines, with polished imports declining by 51 percent to $3.2 billion, and polished exports reducing 44 percent to $2.6 billion. Net polished imports for the period from January through April in the U.S. were declining 68 percent to $575.8 million. Rough imports for that period dropped 77 percent to $60 million and rough exports were down 70 percent to $43.4 million. For net rough imports of $16.6 million, a decline of 86 percent was noticed from 2008. Till April 2009, the net diamond inventory dropped 69 percent to $592.4 million.

Diamond Jewelry Sales Accounts More Than 50% Of US Market

The total average ticket for anniversary jewelry is nearly $1,200. But the diamond jewelry sales worth $3,000 and above creates about half of total revenues from anniversary diamond jewelry. Thus, the opportunity for jewelers is to tap the market for higher ticket anniversary jewelry.

Diamond jewelry has a market share of 55% of total jewelery sales in the US market (source: Diamond Information Centre). Nearly 50% of worldwide diamond jewelery sales are generated in the US according to the Jewelry Industry Research Institute. Diamond jewelry had a share of 75% of the US division’s retail sales in fiscal 2009, which is same as that of previous years.

Retail jewelers announced that diamond jewelry sales were exceptionally weak during 2008 holiday selling season. According to preliminary data, it seems that diamond jewelry sales were reduced by 20-25 percent in the November-December period. For the complete year, the number of diamond jewelry sales were reduced by 8-9 percent in the U.S. Market. This also includes both specialty jewelers and other merchants who are selling diamond jewelry.

American Consumers Give More Preference To Image

Americans generally have serious concerns with their physical appearance, and most of them are willing to attempt anything that will boost their image. According to survey conducted by an American Demographics, 87 percent of adults say that they are ready to change any part of their body for cosmetic reasons and only about 28 percent of American adults feel themselves attractive.

Primping (dressing neatly) and preening (beautifying) are integral human characteristics. People purchase jewelry to draw attention to a body part or distant from a body part.

Psychologists say that women more possibly takes care about how they look, whereas men assesses themselves by what they can do. Due to the inheritance in the human psyche, most jewelry is purchased by women.

A new study reveals that the richest Americans, who are upset by the state of the economy, are cutting back on expenditure on luxury items and jewelry, as they are more bothered about their own financial security and worried that the recession will last more than a year.
